well it is that time of year, so sue me

New Year Resolutions

I hate New Year resolutions, an inane concept if ever there was one.

Yet in the interests of blogging and having something to say, for I have been quiet, I shall make an exception to my usual rule.

If pressed I guess every year I do have the same thoughts, that the next one I shall endeavour to have more fun, a simple premise and a noble one at that I reckon. Can’t really fail that sort of resolution, well not without some serious misfortune, of which I’ve had my fair share – haven’t we all, yet one can always have some fun in any calendar year so prepare to tick the ‘passed resolution box’ in about 365 ¼ days.

So heres me Resolutions:

I shall endeavour to have more fun
I will try my hardest not to give up smoking – take that ya anti smoking wowsers
I shall attempt to remember one programme for more than 30 seconds after reading a TV listing – what is it with TV guides, are they some sort of amnesia device?
I will exercise more often and more regularly
I will stop running
I will not become a food bore
I shall support all and any regime change in the United States Of America – the US population deserve a better way of governance
I will purchase more music and play it loudly
I shall not become a wine snob – what’s wrong with casks?
I shall drink more single malt whiskeys
I shall not learn to mix records, again. Enough of this handicap
I will talk more on the radio about the music I play (this could be a hard one)
I shall endeavour to be a better friend
I will watch less TV
I shall go to the theatre at least once
I shall attend an art opening for more than the free wine
I will laugh out loud as often as needed, I so can’t fail this one
I will work harder on my spelling, grammar and writing skills, or lack thereof
I will continue to blog
I will find fortune and buy a house and get a dog
I shall buy at least one lotto ticket to achieve the above
I will work harder but not necessarily longer
I will love and be loved
I will mend some broken fences
I will shun some that aren’t worthy my efforts
I shall spend some quality time on myself and with my friends
I shall spend some time with normal New Zealanders
I shall swear never to hang with normal New Zealanders again
I shall watch one game of rugby, maybe even go to a game…. Nah stuff that action, do I look brain dead?
I shall grow a beard and put flowers in my hair, ummm maybe not
I shall invent a cure for cancer and gift it to the world – yep I did get a ‘my first science kit’ from santa
I’ll spend some quality time with me family and show em my knees
I will listen to more music
I will stop taking spam so seriously and learn to accept my undersized member
I shall eat like a king and marry a princess, well the food bit anyways
I shall overcome adversity, handicap and disaster if any befall me
I shall stay true to my beliefs and be open minded to those of others
I shall catch up with some old and not seen for a long time chums
I will wish I hadn’t drunk so much on at least 37 mornings and one afternoon
I shall attempt to put some semblance of order into my music collection
I will go out more often
I will spend more time with little people, you know children, cause they really do rock!
I will be more positive, except when I’m hating
I shall adopt a foreigner and show em what is cool about my country
I will think about growing up and spending money on boring household items
I shall not take this list seriously nor make any conscious effort to achieving anything on this list, bar those I choose to

I think that should do it on a personal level, roll on the new year, I can’t wait to get stuck into these…..

2006 – some hopes/ideas for a better world

I hope that we finally discover or are discovered by an alien presence, one that doesn’t want to take our woman folk nor use us for target practice or anal probe us (well me at least)
I hope that them that are obsessed with profit and money find a means to do so that actually benefits humanity as a whole and not just themselves and their power elites
That world peace lark may just get popular with them that can actually make a difference
World hunger and poverty becomes the domain of history books
The word democracy actually has meaning again and isn’t applied on others by force
The Simpsons continues to be produced and doesn’t lose any of what makes it so damn fine
I’d say the end of all military, but I kind of dig tanks and the like, so maybe just change the death and killing aspect and replace it with beer and laughter
The dumbing down of society will reverse and be replaced by empowerment and education
Hollywood will start to make movies again and not just over priced, overly long remakes
Capitalism will be seen as the stupid old fashioned outmoded concept it is and be replaced with something workable and beneficial for all humanity
Politicians will learn that truth, honesty and honour are traits the public appreciate
People will realise David Hasslehoff is neither funny nor ironic; he’s just a shite actor with bad hair. Come on people lift ya standards
A cure of cancer, Aids and all those yucky diseases will be found that is safe, workable, and affordable to all and doesn’t involve the maiming or mocking of chimps
Spam will be eradicated, you evil fucks!
We will learn that physical beauty is only skin deep
Marketing people will learn that they are not essential to our collective well being and will earn less than street cleaners – a good product should always beat a good brand, you evil fucks!

Three things not to do in 2006

Don’t mouth breathe
Don’t hedge shape (it’s a sickness)
Don’t take wooden coins

Give peas a chance and see ya on the other side

Children Avert Your Eyes

I guess this means I won't be getting a bike, again then.

Oh well at least I know why.

At the risk of being controversial

Have fun and be safe people :)

The Long and the Short Of It – 2005 a year in review

48 Shows
96 Hours on air
817 tracks played (not including today’s show)
90 minutes (approx) of voice breaks
100 (approx) texts inferring the music I play is shit
80% Vinyl / 20% CD (my guesstimate)
Two records started at the wrong speed
Two MP3 files played
Two Shows I thought were ok(ish)
One sore back from carrying record bags
Zero mixing, some blending

Significant personal milestone: April 2005, 20 years since I did my first ever radio show - Radio Contact, 1440 IXC, Hamilton, First Song ever played - Killing Joke "Follow The Leader", I got told off for playing it, LOL

Massive Respect to: Thane Kirby and Jef Kay and all the GeorgeFM crew, you people rock! My good friends Mark Nola and Wayde Webster for another year of talking and making me listen to so much shite music. Those who lend me records. Them that inspire me and are my musical inspiration.

Extra Special thanks to: Andy Pickering, Wayde Websta and Scott Lelo for taking care of the show when I was away.

Big shout outs to the listeners, its all for nothing without your ears, as ever it’s been a blast

Lies, lies and more damned lies

I wasted half an hour of my life watching President Bush's latest speech to the American people.

What a load of arse, is all I can say.

Thirty minutes of my life I shall never recover, I feel well ripped off.

How can the President of a 'freedom loving' democractic nation get away with his continual use of half truths, lies and total fabrications when addressing his constituants?

How can he and his administration continue to link Saddam Hussain with September 11?

How can the American public and the world sit back and not see these speeches as what they are - rather badly constructed propaganda. Josef Gobbels would be ashamed.

How, how, how..... hell it really is a insult to anyone thinking person on this planet and any other life forms that may be watching us from afar. This sort of shit demands ET stay home, don't visit cause we is morons. Brutal, violent, uncaring and hypocricitical morons.

One of the blessings of our free society is that we can debate these issues openly, even in a time of war. Most of the debate has been a credit to our democracy, but some have launched irresponsible charges. They say that we act because of oil, that we act in Iraq because of Israel, or because we misled the American people.

said George...

They are of course right, the President leads by misleading. The Bush speech failed to adhere to the most basic rules of integrity, even for a politician.

Jeeze I should be used to this crap by now, yet having had the displeasure of a sleepless night and thus stumbling upon said speech, then foolishly watching it I have only myself to blame, perhaps thats why I am so wound up.

I see this morning the polls have closed in Iraq, Condi - can I call her that?

The President does so why not me - I reckon he can't pronouce her full name... well anyways Condoleezza Rice, I mean Condi, has already declared the election a victory for democracy... she did the same thing immediately after the polls closed in Afganistan too - I wouldn't be surprised if she already knows the results, even if it takes two weeks for the votes to be tallied and counted on the ground.

New Zealand based Iraqi's can't vote - 3000 of them (approx) because Iraq only allows 15 nations to have their local Iraq population vote in the elections - whats with that? If they fly to Sydney they could cast a vote, they might get the bash over there as well...

Democracy is rapidly becoming a very dirty word.

Speaking of dirty, hows them Australians.... the race riots of the past week are for someone sitting just across the ditch (Tasman Sea for the geographically inclined) are quite shocking and frightening for us Kiwis.

Shit like that would never happen here we smugly congratulate oursleves and you know I doubt very much that sort of thing would, we learnt a lot in 1981 (Springbok Tour) and have learnt even more since.

We have our race problems, we have our cultural biases, we have our fair share of thugs and red necks... we are also very similar to our cousins across that there ditch, yet we are so different too and one thing we know, even the haters, that rascism just ain't cool or acceptable in this country. I hope this never changes. No scrub that I hope we get better at this living together lark, for whilst I am proud of how we as a nation have tackled many of our race issues, there is always more we can do, both as a nation and as individuals.

As the weekend nears I imagine that Sydney readies itself for more violence, more hate and more tragedy. Lets hope that whatever happens over there it is minor compared to last weekend, I somehow doubt it but we can only hope.

Prime Minister Howard and his government has done a lot to promote racist tendancies, whilst saying the complete opposite, he really is a horrible piece of work.

Though he ain't alone, the media's role in Australia and the US continues to further promote division, misunderstanding and the lack of debate still continues, yes it is slowly getting better but its not enough, both timewise and editorially.

Wishful thinking and lies are the domain of the mainstream media in this day and age, there is better objective reporting and more honest at that of trivial (in world terms) local news in most media than there is for major international events - why is this, well I and many know its about business, politics and ultimately money but the question still needs addressing and must be asked over and over again....

A picture they say is worth a thousand words, so heres one that sums up so many of my thoughts...

America's Funnyman - Neil Hamburger

Gang culture wins on the day

Twenty-five years ago when I created the Crips youth gang with Raymond Lee Washington in South Central Los Angeles, I never imagined Crips membership would one day spread throughout California, would spread to much of the rest of the nation and to cities in South Africa, where Crips copycat gangs have formed. I also didn't expect the Crips to end up ruining the lives of so many young people, especially young black men who have hurt other young black men.

Raymond was murdered in 1979. But if he were here, I believe he would be as troubled as I am by the Crips legacy.

So today I apologize to you all -- the children of America and South Africa -- who just cope every day with dangerous street gangs. I no longer participate in the so-called gangster lifestyle, and I deeply regret that I ever did.

As a contribution to the struggle to end child-on-child brutality and black-on-black brutality, I have written the Tookie Speaks Out Against Gang Violence children's book series. My goal is to reach as many young minds as possible to warn you about the perils of a gang lifestyle.

I am no longer "dys-educated" (disease educated). I am no longer part of the problem. Thanks to the Almighty, I am no longer sleepwalking through life.

I pray that one day my apology will be accepted. I also pray that your suffering, caused by gang violence, will soon come to an end as more gang members wake up and stop hurting themselves and others.

I vow to spend the rest of my life working toward solutions.

Amani (Peace),

Stanley "Tookie" Williams, Surviving Crips
Co-Founder,
April 13, 1997

Yesterday Tookie Williams was murdered by a gang, a state sanctioned gang that operates policies of vengence and violence.

Tookie Williams had 5 nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize for his actions since being imprisioned. He was not a innocent man, yet he is most probably innocent of the crimes he was convicted and now murdered for.

They call it a medical procedure, I call it an act cold blooded and cowardly murder. In this case we know who the guilty are, without a shadow of doubt.

I live in a city where some consider themselves to be Bloods and Crips, so far has the legacy of the gangland culture that Tookie helped start spread. Here like LA the underlying factor is one of race and poverty.

People don't start nor join gangs when there are better and easier lifestyle choices available. There are lessions to be learnt, and the continuation of violence is not one of them.

The following words from someone who themselves fell victim to a violent and untimely death still give cause to hope for a better world, one where vengence and subsequently violence is redundant

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one

Slowly Confronting the Truth (version 6.1)

Anyone else noticed how the mainstream media is starting to be quite critical of all that surrounds Iraq and US Foreign Policy?

Or is it just me and the hours I keep that have lead me to feel this way?

I do feel the winds of war are a changing, the tired and lumbering world of multinational corporate media are moving away from regurgitating official press releases and actually presenting perhaps the ‘truth’ for a change, or atleast increasingly a version of it that has thus far been all but buried. The stories themselves are very old for them who've been following this folly of a invasion/occupation/pacification but I do feel things are coming to light that need to from the quarters that have still the greatest access to the masses.

It’s with a sense of déjà vu I sit and watch stories unfolding that for myself and many millions of other war/US/Bush watchers have read and often debated about on the net for ages, years in some cases.

I can’t help thinking that Bush and Co (TM pending) are finally reaping the rewards of the seeds they sowed. The lies, the manipulation, the false reporting, the arrogance and the disastrous policies his administration have put into practice are starting to bite Bush and Co on the bum. That must hurt almost as much as the thought that them who so blindly supported and reported on all that went down on Capital Hill and the results thereof are starting to maybe cover their own arses.

After all the people are themselves starting to question more than blindly follow and thus the media need to shift to retain what credibility they can in the publics eyes and dish up the sorts of articles they have all but buried since that fateful day of September 11.

I’m a cynical guy and figure not much will change for the better, the average non news follower will change their mind with the wind and the media will continue to retrench and regurgitate anything that helps them retain any readership/ listener ship/ watchers they can. It’s tough out there and competition is fierce for all media outlets. Better that they lift their game than continue to dumb shit down.

The internet has risen and risen and has arisen. As such increasingly the people are not reliant on mega corporate for their slice of news and commentary. Yet another facet of the digital revolution is coming of age (come of age?) and them who have basked in the vast wealth of serving up our news are desperately trying to play catch up in a medium that is not profitable for them and their shareholders, man that must do them in charges heads in. Understandably so.

I imagine the catch cry in many a board room is back to basics, core business and strange words like truth, investigative journalism and independence from government intervention. Hopefully so, for we live in a world where we have millions of highly qualified journalists who are seriously intelligent and with a bit of prompting most of them could even become independent thinkers, of that I am sure. Imagine the stories these bright young, and not so young, things could present us with given the freedom and support of their masters.

None of this is really new nor news, but I do feel that changes are afoot and perhaps for a nice change we the ordinary will actually benefit.

Knowledge is power and an empowered population is the greatest platform for a healthy and freedom loving society, I reckon.

Who knows… maybe pigs can fly after all.

The Letter U and the Numeral 2

In August of 1991, SST Records released a single by the band Negativland simply called U2, featuring snippets of U2 recordings, outtakes from Casey Kasem's American Top 40, and a mangled version of U2's song "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

Shortly after the release, Island Records filed a lawsuit against Negativland and SST over copyright infringement and deceptive packaging (the cover featured the letter 'U' and the numeral '2' in huge type). An out-of-court settlement was reached, but Island demanded repayment for its legal expenses and other incurred costs.

Apparently this cost the band over $90,000 US. A considerable sum of money for a independent recording act, one who in the interview mentioned below estimate they didn’t as a band earn that much in over twelve years.

In June of 1992 U2's publicist in L.A. contacted Mondo 2000 magazine on behalf of the group's guitarist, The Edge, with the idea of doing a rare interview concerning the group's Zoo TV tour and its use of technology.

Mondo editor R. U. Serius then (RUS), without The Edge's (E) knowledge, contacted his friends Don Joyce (D) and Mark Hosler (M) of Negativland with an invitation to participate in the interview. On June 25th Negativland joined R. U. Serius to await the following call from The Edge in Dublin.

The general interview is a really good read, the Edge who was really put in a spot, continued with the interview and was not just good humoured but also allowed the Negitivland members to have their say and responded in what appears to be a honest and open manner, all credit to the Edge, I'd imagine most people in his position would have simply hung up the phone – I know I would have.

I've included a snippet from the interview to show the crux of the issue presented by Negitivland to the Edge. I suggest reading the entire interview, especially those of you interested in sampling and the issues surrounding that means of media manipulation.

I care little for U2 or the members of the band, yet in the context of this interview The Edge was not just good humoured but also allowed the Negitivland members to have their say and responded in what appears to be a very honest and open manner, all credit to the Edge and much respect.

"M: One thing I'm curious about--there's been more and more controversy over copyright issues and sampling, and I thought that one thing you're doing in the Zoo TV tour is that you were taking these TV broadcasts--copyrighted material that you are then re-broadcasting right there in the venue where people paid for a ticket--and I wondered what you thought about that.

D: And whether you had any problem, whether it ever came up that that was illegal.

E: No, I mean, I asked the question early on--is this going to be a problem?, and apparently it, I don't think there is a problem. I mean, in theory I don't have a problem with sampling. I suppose when a sample becomes just part of another work then it's no problem. If sampling is, you know, stealing an idea and replaying the same idea, changing it very slightly, that's different. We're using the visual and images in a completely different context. If it's a live broadcast, it's like a few seconds at the most. I don't think, in spirit, there's any...

D: So you would say that a fragmentary approach is the way to go.

E: Yeah. You know, like in music terms, we've sampled things, people sample us all the time, you know, I hear the odd U2 drum loop in a dance record or whatever. You know, I don't have any problem with that.

D: Well, this is interesting, because we've been involved in a similar situation along these lines...

RUS: In fact, maybe it's time for me to interject here. The folks that you've been talking to, Don and Mark, aside from being occasional contributors to MONDO 2000, are members of a band called Negativland.

E: Ahhhhhh!"

If you want to hear the single it can be streamed or downloaded from here.

The irony in this case is why the band sampled U2 in the first place (from the same interview):

E: Well, it's been good to talk to you and sort of figure out where you're coming from--it's a little hard to tell from the record, quite what your intentions were.

M: Do you want to know what inspired the whole thing, though?

E: What?

M: It was getting the tape of Casey Kasem. We heard that tape and we thought, this is so amazing, we cannot be the only people to have this. We have to share this with the whole world. It's too great.

E: Ha ha ha.

M: And then he was talking about U2, so we said, "Let's use some music by U2," and the idea grew. That was sort of the seed of the idea and it just grew and grew.

E: Yeah, yeah. Well, it's been really good talking to you."

Another summery and view of the wider issures of the case taken from this article.

"Within two weeks, Island filed a suit attacking U2 on two counts, claiming that the song's cover art violated trademark protection and that its music's "unauthorized use of a sound recording" violated copyright law. Island demanded that every copy of the single and all materials for its promotion and manufacture be immediately delivered to the company for destruction and that U2's copyright be reassigned to Island. In less than a month, Negativland and SST Records stood to lose an estimated US$70,000 - more than Negativland had made in 11 years as a band. The group counted on fair use's wrinkle to justify U2.

But faced with massive potential expenses and growing pressure from both Island and SST, the band agreed to settle out of court. "It felt to me like my child had been kidnapped," remembers Hosler, who, with other members, suddenly faced terms of an injunction he couldn't afford to fight. SST, which stood to lose even more, pressured them to accept the settlement.

Two grim realizations dawned on the band members: The first was that the law, as interpreted, did not legitimize their aural collage as art. The second was that business interests within the music industry, relying on the economic expense of legal battles, had the capability to squelch small artists who sought to challenge the legal status quo. From the start, Island's argument had been one of economics:

Negativland was attempting to profit from U2's popularity, and the group had timed its decoy release to coincide with an upcoming U2 release (previously Joshua Tree had sold more than 6 million copies in the US).

And Negativland couldn't afford to prove themselves innocent.

"It wasn't a policy at Island records but a de facto understanding throughout the record industry," Grigg clarified. "There's a certain way things are supposed to be done.

If you don't play by the rules, they come down on you. If SST had paid the compulsory license fees for the song, this probably wouldn't have happened."

"But art has always had the job of using the best means available to make statements about individual life," he continues. "It's extremely effective to actually apply our hands to this media barrage, cut it up, and turn it into something else that comments on it. That's one of the best ways to make art that we can see right now. But that's the central problem: the laws don't realize the legitimacy of this."

According to Negativland, current statutes don't take into account any of a number of artistic forms and techniques, some of which may "actually conflict with what others claim to be their economic domain."

Appropriated art is commonplace in other milieus - Rauschenberg and Warhol made great use of it in the fine arts, and borrowed melodies are common in folk music - but it has yet to be acknowledged in contemporary musical forms. "If you read the copyright laws," Joyce says, his frustration showing, "there's only 'pay for everything you use' or parody. But surrealism? Unknown. Collage? Never heard of it. It's as if collage never happened."

Jeff Selman, an attorney who, through California Lawyers for the Arts, began to assist Negativland after the settlement, says it another way: "Whether or not someone would look at a visual or musical collage and say 'Yes, that's an allowable fair use' hasn't been tested. It's a fine-line distinction between what's pirating and what's fair use. But everybody may be trying to draw fine lines where they can't be drawn." He points back to the central argument in the whole case: "It comes down to an issue of money."

This is all history really, the world marched on, Negitivland continued to release records when the need/desire arose and I assume paid the legal costs Island Records incurred as per the out of court settlement. So why am I dragging this up today one might wonder.

Well, U2 are to tour here next year. So it was reason enough to trawl back to the above story and track for me, plus I downloaded the single to play on me radio show as my personal reaction to the begginings of U2 hype, yeah I don't care much for their music so I wanted to add in my own small way something linked to but not of this band.

Plus its a damn funny track, one I just missed out on getting a copy of the record when released and have ever since wanted for my collection. I sometimes look the single up on Gemm to see how much it'd cost me, currently theres a copy for US $115, well out of my price range for a curiousty item.

The concert tickets went on sale here yesterday, it sold out in less than 90 minutes, I believe the venue holds 38,000 people. As a side note I read somewhere yesterday that a U2 concert in Christchurch around 1989 had 90,000 people attend and was the largest turnout on that particular World Tour. So it's safe to bet this was going to sell out.

Within hours scalpers had placed tickets on New Zealand's version of E-Bay Trademe. Scalping is in my view an abhorrent way to make money. For a multitude of reasons, one that gets me is that due to some peoples practice those without the means to buy online or via the telephone or were just lucky enough to be in the right part of the queue to get a ticket before they ran out - you know them who don't have internet, credit cards or other facilities to do anything other than queue physically to purchase their ticket, possibly having to save specifically to afford the ticket.

Those fans who aren't wealthy are unjustly denied tickets by those with the means to bulk buy and then profit from that purchase, tax free to boot. General admission tickets were $99 (top priced seating were $199), not a huge sum, yet a significant one for those who don't have excess cash floating around, especially as we are heading towards Christmas, consider for a moment many fans will have children, mortgages and other commitments that purchasing a ticket(s) at $99 is a large outlay of cash.

Scalpers by artificially raising the price for those not lucky enough to get one initially only alienate and exclude those fans who simply can't afford vast sums for one nights entertainment.

Whilst the ownership of music is a luxury and attending concerts is too, for those fans who have followed a band such as U2 for many years should not be excluded due to personal financial circumstance, if they can afford the official ticket price and the other costs of attending that should be it, they should not be putting money in someone’s pockets who has no association with the event or the band itself.

If this practice goes unchecked then concerts, sporting events and so many other activities that are going to sell out due to excessive demand will simply become the domain for the rich and I for one am totally opposed to excluding segments of the marketplace from attending any event due to price alone. Sure not everyone can afford nor go to everything, but I don't want our society to be further fragmented and segmented by financial status alone.

There’s been a second concert scheduled, so perhaps punters will get another crack at securing a ticket at the advertised price and no doubt for scalpers to try their luck again and make some more money.

I guess, I also get to play the offending Negitivland single again, which I may just do. Probably not til the event itself, no need for overkill now is there…

… or more likely that’s it for me and this particular curious piece of musical trivia and its offending single.

Is Democracy a dirty word?

One would hope not, yet recent history has shown how often this noble concept has been sullied by misrepresentation and in today’s world how those that use it or should I say use it in name only often have no concept as to its actual meaning.

The basis of this post was raised by this article; it has also been liberally borrowed from.

Lets start by backtracking some years to the inception of the United States, as they expanded into the interior the slave owners and land hungry business owners did so under the guise of democracy and freedom, I doubt the native American Indians or Mexicans would agree. During the First World War Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the US involvement in the First World War would “make the world safe for democracy." This is perhaps one of the more accurate uses of the term, though the end result was anything but.

Post Second World War as the Soviet’s gobbled up large chunks of Eastern Europe the new governments were called People’s Democracies, which of course no one would for a second consider them to be so, well no one I know.

Since then the debasement of the term and meaning of Democracy has been the corner stone of so much of the United States expansionist/imperialist policies, a nation that specialises in nation deconstruction, rebuilding is not a concept they have neither any understanding nor mastering of.

The Cold War was also seen and promoted by the US as a fight for freedom and democracy. And most subsequent US involvement in other nations affairs have all been passed off under a variety of ruses with the D word always being touted as reason for and justification of any and all foreign policy initiatives.

What would the peoples of Mossadeq's Iran, Arbenz's Guatemala, and Allende's Chile have to say about the US concept of Democracy, three democratic nations that were overthrown and replaced with vicious dictatorships thanks to the freedom loving USA, or I should say US administrations.

Even today’s president a huge promoter of Democracy cannot do much more than sully the word, for his actual appointment as President is not a sign of a healthy democracy but rather how one can subvert the democratic practice o get the result one desires. A bit of reading about the last two Presidential elections has more than enough reading to make the most avid promoter of Democracy wonder where things went wrong.

Since September 11, a date that we world watchers always come back to, its a date that will go down in history as being a sad day for anyone who cherishes Democracy.

Would modern day Iraq, be in the state it is in if the nations comprising the Coalition of The Willing had listened to what the public were saying – you know representing constituents wishes? That weird old Democratic premise, is it antiquated to do as the people desire?

Well possibly some nations would still be involved, the US for sure initially were all up for some revenge, and here I can’t help but understand and agree, that something had to happen post those horrific attacks. Just not the courses of action they did take and that have impacted on just about every soul on the planet.

Anyway Iraq, Spain for example would never have been there in the first place if the then leaders had taken public opinion into account – they later paid for that decision with the Madrid bombings - a high price to pay by them that didn’t want to be there in the first place.

Have the democratic elections in Afghanistan done anything to promote democracy? I would say no, the evidence is stacked very high against that election being either free or representative of the peoples wish. Is Afghanistan better off without the Taliban - unfortunately not. Are the world’s drug addicts better off – too bloody right!

Has the subsequent actions of the Coalition since the initial invasion of Iraq done anything to push and promote democracy, I would strong suggest not. The elections in a couple of weeks will be heralded as a victory for democracy and somewhere behind the rhetoric will be a strong hint of corruption, foul play and the stench of regression for the average Iraqi. Who wins is immaterial in many ways, for the victors are the shareholders in British and US corporations, them ‘rebuilding’ the country and preparing to rape that nation’s oil industry. They don’t need to vote for the elections will go their way, no matter what. That’s not Democracy.

Has the will of the American people been listened to over what’s happening in Iraq? No, yet opinion polls show the majority of Americans feel they were lied to over Iraq’s WMD, involvement in the terrorist attacks of September 11 and well just about everything concerned with the pre and post invasion plans (or non plans) of the current Whitehouse regime. Let’s not even start on the criminal way that their own citizens were handled in New Orleans and surrounding areas during and post Hurricane Katrina.

Has it been any better anywhere else? Well I think the British and Australians would be very similar to the US, except in both of these nations there has been more debate and opposition in the hallways of power concerning both of there involvement in Iraq. Not enough perhaps to make a difference but it was there at least and debate was had.

I wonder where the hell has the American’s Democrats been all this time? If anything the lack of a decent opposition to Bush and his cronies’ policies is the biggest stumbling block the American population faces. From my rather naïve viewpoint all I noticed was two parties with very similar polices going to the polls during the last election, where was a the anti war debates? Where was the staunch criticism of current US Foreign Policy? I know there was some but it was hollow compared to the many, many Americans that are fundamentally and vehemently opposed to the initial invasion and every subsequent action of the current White House administration. I know there’s tens of thousands if not tens of millions of American’s who have opposed this whole fiasco since the get go – for I am reliant very often on their commentators for my readings and sources of opinion pieces. Why are they not being listened too?

I was aghast when a New Zealander, Commonwealth secretary-general and Don McKinnon questioned the importance of democracy at the opening of the leaders' summit at the recent CHOGM conference in Malta. A comment that lead to quite a bit of press here, as our Prime Minister Helen Clark took exception to his comments and said so.

Is democracy dead – of course not. Has the term been mishandled and abused by so many to promote less than democratic interests? Yes.

Of course whilst the few examples I’ve given here are all well and good, the debasement of language and its meanings is nothing new especially when in the hands of propaganda merchants.

Hitler’s Germany is testament to this and the way them in power have coerced and manipulated public sentiment ever since he and his cronies perfected many techniques for moulding public sentiment, skills that were not unique to that regime, just one of the better examples of modern employment methods. Hitler’s concept of the “big lie” is worth researching for them who can be bothered. Basically it boils down to the bigger the lie presented to the public the more likely they are to believe it, or something along those lines.

This year I personally have witnessed the debasement of our own Democratic process, yep that small but significant bug bear of mine, the lack of sausage sizzles at our polling booths at this years elections. A small sign we aren’t the country we once were…. How can people make the right personal choices if there’s no chance of a sausage at the end of it? Its no wonder there was no clear winner in our election, its not that us Kiwis don’t know what we want, it’s that we’re easily confused when things aren’t as they should be. We are a simple lot…

In less than two weeks the Iraqi’s go to the polls, Democracy will not be the winner on the day. For the first time in many years I keep thinking of Orwell’s 1984, for it seems we are heading to a time when this is a accurate reflection of much of the world, not a interesting and thought provoking read.

Remember; never fear to question those that use democracy as a justification for their actions, for behind the veneer is too often self interest and abuse of power, no matter what the level.

I for one am staunchly in support of the notion and concept of a democratic world, one that treasures individual freedoms whilst balancing them with the common good. A world where people are free from fear and live in harmony side by side, regardless of gender, colour or religious belief.

Yet, once again reality and my idealism are so far apart that the universe could squeeze between them with room to spare.

Roll on the weekend, for its officially our summer and the weather has for once agreed with that concept and I’m DJ’ing at a mates 40th, I shall not be democratic in the DJ booth, they the people will get what I want to play and they bloody better enjoy it!

Power corrupts… ain’t that the truth!

Undue influence

In 1976 No one died
In 1977 No One Died
In 1978 Someone died
In 1979 No one died
In 1980 No One Died
In 1981 We had that incident with the pigeon
In 1982 No One died
In 1983 No One Died
In 1984 No one died in 1985
I could go on you know....

These lines will make no sense to most, for those of you who have seen The Day Today the comedy show that was the cornerstone of so many brilliant UK comedies and comedians since its inception should, I hope, be laughing about now.

I first came across the show whilst living in London, I stumbled upon it one night after a very heavy drinking session and thought it was the real news... I got confused and didn't understand. My flatmates were rolling around the floor and I was scratching my head prior to passing out.

The next week I was well primed (yeah more beer) and became a devout fan, so much so that when I finally had to leave the UK to return home I was rushing around London frantically looking for the video's of the show which had just been released to buy and bring home with me. I doubt theres any of my close friends I haven't forced at some point to watch the shows with me, poor sods :) I still watch them from time to time and they never fail to have me in fits of laughter.

For a show that never screened here you'd be amazed at how much of a impact its had on our screens, well from certain quarters that is. Newsboy, Havoc and anything with a few key behind the scenes people has elements of this groundbreaking show liberally scattered throughout.

Me I'm a sucker for good comedy, of which there is so much yet still so little that truely stands the test of time and keeps funny bone rattling.

Now here's Alan with the sport...

Spam can be profound

I read spam - now before some smart alec suggests anything, I do need to get out more....

Yesterday I came across some lines in a spam email found in my junk folder that I simply cannot workout the connection between me buying some product to enhance my penis size and the comments tacked onto the end of the email.

Here's the comments:

Not even computers will replace committees, because committees buy computers.
Every government is run by liars. Nothing they say should be believed.
To you I'm an atheist; to God, I'm the Loyal Opposition.
Let thy speech be short, comprehending much in a few words.
No one finds life worth living; he must make it worth living.
Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.

Perhaps having a bigger dick will make me cleverer...

You’re not from round here are you boy

I spend far too much time focusing my attention on current affairs, nothing wrong with that, yet my focus is affairs from other lands more often than not and this morning I feel its time I looked at my own back yard, more than I do or at least more than I have typed to date.

To many outsiders New Zealand may possibly look like a paradise, for we enjoy a life and lifestyle so many can only dream of. We like to call our corner of the world, godzone – we really are that, um, smug.

Yet anyone who spends more than 30 seconds looking at our fair little land will soon come across many signs that alls not right or as it could/should be. If we could implement policy as well as we promote our clean green image we’d be doing a lot better than we are…

I decided it was time to look closer to home after reading a article on domestic USA about Thanksgiving – something I only really know about here, cause of all the thanksgiving specials we eventually see on US Sit Coms etc. I’ve seen over the course of my TV life.

I’m representing the entire article here, as I really think it is worth reading and I can’t be arsed only providing a link – for the curious I grabbed it from Znet which has a link on the sidebar.

Thanksgiving and more Taking
by Norman Solomon

“When Thanksgiving arrives, the media coverage is mostly predictable. Feature stories tell of turkeys and food drives for the needy. We hear about why some people, famous and unknown, say they feel thankful. And, of course, holiday advertising campaigns launch via TV, radio and print outlets.

Like our own responses to Thanksgiving, the repeated media messages are apt to be contradictory. Answers to basic questions run the gamut: How much time and money should we spend on the holiday dinner compared to helping the less fortunate? Is this really the time to count our blessings -- or yield to ads that tell us how satisfied we'll be after buying the latest brand-new products and services?

Under the surface, some familiar media themes are at cross purposes this time of year. Holiday celebrations that speak to the need for compassion and spiritual connection are frequently marked by efforts and expenditures that point in opposite directions. Within the media echo chambers, a lot of the wallpaper is the color of money.

In its unadorned state, the idea of being thankful is on a collision course with "Thanksgiving" the commercialized media phenomenon. To explore the genuine realms of giving thanks is to pause and mull over good fortune -- dwelling on it while hopefully mustering at least a bit of humility and gratitude for life along the way. But the prevalent emphasis on goodies for dinner-table consumption and the big-hype kickoff of the holiday buying season are media cues with widespread effects.

As a practical matter, in the media world, late November brings a ritualized frenzy that makes cash registers ring (or whatever they do these digital days). Anyone who takes thanksgiving seriously as a potential activity for reflection is likely to sense a disconnect with profuse media content that seems to be unclear on the concept.

Whether seen in religious or humanist terms, the deeper approaches to "giving thanks" are distant from what has become the expected from mass media this time of year. Actual thanksgiving might bring the recognition that many people have at least all they really need -- and are damn lucky, too, given the circumstances of many human lives on this planet. In contrast, a wide array of media messaging tells us that we don't have what we need -- and if we can just spend money the right way, we'll get it.

Television commercials are constantly making the case that we should not -- must not -- be content with what we have. And the ads offer innumerable ways that spending money can remedy the situation. In that sense, much of media keeps stoking the hot coals of unthankfulness -- dismissing what we already have as woefully insufficient.

It's easy enough for media outlets to supply something for everyone at Thanksgiving time. We can choose to focus on replicas of some heartfelt sincerity along with facile sentimentality in news coverage. There are plenty of human-interest stories and recipes, plus the obligatory tales of gobblers that encounter or evade the guillotine. But overall, the commercialism pegged to Thanksgiving provides the most powerful undercurrents for the holiday.

Meanwhile, the barrage of publicized attention to Thanksgiving gives very short shrift to the original Thanksgiving. Newly arrived settlers in their new world, we've been told, gratefully received help from savvy Indians who generously shared their food and knowledge of how to prepare for the oncoming winter. And that oft-neglected story, in turn, is rarely examined as a parable for how Europeans who arrived in North America several centuries ago were glad to take from native people -- and then proceeded to plunder and kill with a zeal that became genocidal.

Today, some people have bountiful tables while others have very little. On the rhetorical surface, Thanksgiving marks a time of appreciation. But meanwhile, most of all, media outlets encourage us to buy -- and forget.”

As said we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here (yet…) and I am trying to present a more Kiwi specific perspective here, today. This article when applied to the Christmas session that is upon us, rings true as it does for my American friends who have just celebrated this holiday and are also marching towards a time of Santa.

I stumbled upon a documentary yesterday as I was procrastinating about what to do with my day, I can’t find any information about it, unfortunately and I do hope I stumble upon it again. It was called Born In 1984, a look at modern New Zealand and how our society is changing and has changed, from the viewpoint and focusing on those born in 84 (surprising that bit eh). I can’t find anything about it online and I’m damn grumpy as I’ve just been to that gawdaweful thing TVNZ calls a website and couldn’t find a thing… agh I feel dirty.

If anyone gets a chance it’s a damn fine documentary, gives some sobering insights into the pressures our younger generation face and the way money is such a huge part of their life and lifestyle, way more than in my day. There were enough sobering facts and commentary gleaned from researchers and experts which in itself is sobering stuff but what I enjoyed and appreciated the most was how the facts were presented alongside the less tangible comments by the youngsters interviewed, both sides of the coin so to speak. A mixed bunch of youths were interviewed and I must say what a startling bunch they were, articulate and aware of their world in a way I very much doubt I was at a similar age, with the right values and guidance I am sure we could be as a nation that which we pretend we are, things ain’t all chipper downunder but nothing is lost yet.

The after effects of the various economic reforms of the past twenty years have added to our poverty rates and pushed more of my country people into bloody grim circumstances, situations that whilst not new or that much different from most other nations, for me its always a shock to see how much our once world beating Social Welfare state and lifestyle has been beaten to pieces and continues to be eroded. For a nation our size we can so easily do better.

I’m sick of multi national corporations taking advantage of us and shipping the proceeds offshore – current example at least 500 million heading back to Vodaphone HQ – which is a huge figure in our little pond. Only compounded by the fact we pay some of the highest Telco charges in the world… I don’t begrudge profits to them that earn em, but in the Telco game there is virtually no competition and the two big guys are creaming off so much of our wealth to their parent companies… Here I do believe its time the government stepped in and protected us the people from the blatant profiteering going on, which coming back to the Documentary is a good example. All but one of the youngsters interviewed spent inordinate amounts of their own money on phones and call charges, most of them worked long hours each week to be able to afford the damn things when I believe they should be getting up to mischief and doing that education lark.

Enter the “in my day” statements from a man stuck in his rocking chair….

The other sobering things I gained from my documentary distraction was the increased poverty rates, the continued and increasing levels of domestic violence, the increase in youth suicides and all them other grim and depressing realities that we Kiwis often tend to overlook or simply ignore.

I do hope I stumble on this doco again, as I am sure it’ll be repeated in some anti social timeslot, which is often when I’m viewing as I missed the beginning and I so could do with a repeat.

We can as a nation do so much better; we have fewer barriers than most to having a standard of living that benefits us all. Let’s stop focusing on them with it all and spend more time thinking and doing for them that deserve so much more.

I believe as a nation we can afford to provide more help and assistance to them that need it, empowerment is a worthy and rewarding avenue that will benefit us all.

We need to find that balance between capitalism and socialism that benefits all and ignores none. Time to emulate our sportspeople we hold so dear and lift our game, collectively.

On a bright note to finish – for them that dig our national games (not me) how good must your weekend have been… imagine if you could apply that amazing high you must all be feeling right now to every aspect of our nation.

yep go the kiwis...
