President Barack Obama has just four years to save the planet, according to Prof. James McCarthy.
The professor, who leads the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), held talks on the eve of the annual AAAS meeting to be held in Chicago. He told reporters that the planet faces complete devastation unless the U.S. president changes policy regarding climate change.
He warned that if steps were not immediately taken to thwart an escalating environmental crisis, no steps would be taken at all, reports the BBC News.
Climate control dominates this year's AAAS meeting agenda.
Keynote speakers include former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, along with more than 10,000 scientists expected to attend the meeting.
As reported by the BBC News, Prof. McCarthy wants this opportunity to draft up policies that could be used to combat climate change.
Amid an expanding global recession, the fear amongst the science community is that the environment will take a backseat to the economic crisis.
"This is our window," Prof. McCarthy told BBC News, regarding climate control. "With the science he [Mr. Obama] has, with the realization that these issues are pressing, if they are made second order, I think we have really lost it."
